“Roots and Wings” weaves a powerful narrative that embodies Maharashtra’s deep cultural roots and rapid growth, combining the quiet stories of rural Maharashtra with the pulsating heartbeat of Mumbai. In this contrast between past and future, between tradition and progress, the film reveals the complex challenges and dreams of people caught between heritage and ambition, and examines how they find their place in a rapidly changing world.

A celebrated Mumbai photojournalist whose images once captured the city’s darkest turning points now confronts a changed world—and himself—revealing how photography can still fight discrimination, expose exploitation, and give voice to the unheard.

Sudharak Olwe

Sudharak Olwe has been a Mumbai-based photojournalist since 1988 and has worked as a press photographer with some of the leading newspapers in India. Sudharak has travelled the length and breadth of this nation and seen first hand some incredible stories of resilience, courage and change. He has worked in tandem with many NGOs presenting their extraordinary work with both rural and urban communities. In 2016, Sudharak was conferred the Padma Shri, India’s 4th Highest Civilian Award by the President of India. 

Sudharak’s photography is that of empathy. It is a journey into the unseen perspective of the human condition. His photography cuts across all barriers and presents to you a moving story of individuals and communities.

Artur Ortlieb

Artur Ortlieb is a young filmmaker. After working as a camera assistant, Artur began his studies at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in 2014 with a focus on cinematography. Artur was able to visit the Film and Television Institute of India trough an exchange programm. His films have screened at festivals such as the Max Ophüls Prize and the Saint Petersburg Multivision International Festival of Animation Arts. The film „Arezo“ opened the Hof International Film Festival 2019. In 2022 Artur received the camera award from the Lions Club. This honors cinematographers who focus on socially important work
